Iyer earned a berth in the 2014 Under-19 World Cup by decimating bowling attacks during his collegiate days. Iyer was sent to play for the Trent Bridge cricket squad in England after a poor performance on the slow-ish wickets. Iyer made full advantage of the opportunity when the ball came on to the bat, scoring 297 runs in three innings at a Bradman-like average of 99.
His confidence was boosted by his time at Trent Bridge, and he went on to achieve outstanding results in the domestic competitions that followed. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Ranji Trophy that followed, he averaged above 50, hitting an astounding 809 runs at 50.56 in his first Ranji season. His amount of runs in successive Ranji seasons bordered on the absurd, with 1321 runs in the 2015/16 edition, including seven fifties and four hundred, and a record average of 73.39.
His strike rate was much higher, and he was immediately compared to famous Indian batsman Virender Sehwag for his daring and dominant stroke-play, particularly his hand-eye synchronisation, especially against sudden lateral movement.
Iyer's stroke-playing style is based on picking up the line and length of the ball early and playing through the line of the ball. However, committing to the ball's path of flight early and having too many shots for the same ball are both disadvantages of this approach.
Iyer was picked in the Test team to replace an injured Virat Kohli after hitting 202 off 210 balls in a practise match against Australia in the lead-up to the home series against them in early 2017. He was not given a Test cap, but he was given a place in the limited-overs XI in late 2017. His opportunities in these matches do not provide a large enough sample size to make an assessment of his skill, but based on the numbers and his aggressive stroke-play, he appears to have the potential to become a future superstar in Indian cricket.
Shreyas Iyer earned a staggering 2.6 crores from a starting price of ten lakhs, making him the highest-earning uncapped player of the 2015 auction - IPL jargon meaning the most sought-after uncapped player. Iyer was brought to Delhi by Pravin Amre, the assistant coach of the Delhi Daredevils at the time. Iyer did not disappoint his boyhood coach. After hitting 439 runs in the tournament and receiving the developing player award, he was the talk of the town, showing his aggressive style of play and banging on the selectors' doors for an India call-up.
Iyer's 2016 season, on the other hand, was a complete opposite, as he only scored 30 runs in the six innings he played for Delhi. In the 2017 season, the Mumbai kid regained his form and scored 336 runs, with the best score of 96. But the 2018 season was a watershed moment for Iyer; he was consistent throughout the season and, halfway through the season, he was named Delhi's captain after Gautam Gambhir stepped down.
