Six runs are the maximum that the batsmen can score on a legitimate delivery in cricket. Cricket has evolved a lot since its inception, and so has the batting style of cricketers. In today’s time, a miss-hit from the bat can also land for a six, and hitting sixes with just one hand has become a trend. The game of cricket has improved a lot in modern times. Within the last few years, there has been some drastic improvement in batting techniques. The number of variations that a bowler owns has also increased. But one record that is still going strong is the longest six in cricket history.
Players Who Have Hit the Longest Six in Cricket History
The record for hitting the biggest six in cricket is under Shahid Afridi’s name. On 17 March 2013, in an ODI against South Africa, he hit a six of the length 158 meters. It was the only time a cricketer could reach the 150-plus meters mark. In that match, he made 88 off 48 deliveries and hit seven 6s during this innings.
The record for longest six in cricket by an Indian batsman is with Yuvraj Singh. In the semi-final of the Twenty-20 World Cup 2007, the southpaw hit a six of 125 meters and was the architect behind India’s win over the then 50-over world champion. This humongous six came against the bowling of Brett Lee.
Cricket records and Afridi go hand in hand. In 1996, he made a century of just 37 balls which was the world record for the fastest century in ODIs until 2014. Corey Anderson made a century of just 36 deliveries in that year. AB de Villiers broke this record in 2015 when he made a century off just 31 balls.
An unexpected name in the list of players who have hit the longest six in cricket history is Brett Lee. He was playing against West Indies in a test match in 2005 at the Gabba. He hit Darren Powell for a six, and the ball traveled a long distance of almost 135 meters.
