Hyderabad vs Kolkata: Today Cricket Match Prediction, and Key Players in Today’s Match

Hyderabad and Kolkata will play today’s Indian T20 League match at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. The Hyderabad vs Kolkata today T20 match will start at 7:30 pm.

After Gautam Gambhir’s exit from the team, Kolkata made Dinesh Karthik captain in 2018. Kolkata qualified for the playoffs that year but has failed to do so in the last two years.

Last year, Karthik left the captaincy in the middle of the season, and Eoin Morgan was elected to lead the side. Morgan could not recreate the same magic that he did with England’s team in the 2019 ODI World Cup.

It would be Morgan’s first stint as a full-time captain of the team. His primary role would be to lead the side to the trophy this year.

Kolkata bought the following eight players in the auction this year:

  • Shakib Al Hasan (All-Rounder)- Rs. 3.2 crore
  • Harbhajan Singh (Bowler)- Rs. 2 crore
  • Ben Cutting (All-Rounder)- Rs. 75 lakh
  • Karun Nair (Batsman)- Rs. 50 lakh
  • Pawan Negi (All-Rounder)- Rs. 50 lakh
  • Venkatesh Iyer (All-Rounder)- Rs. 20 lakh
  • Sheldon Jackson (Wicket-Keeper)- Rs. 20 lakh
  • Vaibhav Arora (Bowler)- Rs. 20 lakh

Last year the duo of Andre Rusell and Sunil Narine did not fire enough for the team. This year, it has got Ben Cutting and Shakib Al Hasan as a like-for-like replacement for the two veterans. Both Rusell and Narine would like to show their power in this Hyderabad vs Kolkata Indian T20 League today match.

Most of the gaps that Kolkata had last year seem to be covered on paper this year. The one big issue that it faced last year was not getting the right set of 11 players on the team. The quest this year would surely be to fix this issue right from the start of the league.

Hyderabad stood in third position at the Indian T20 League 2020 points table despite injuries to several players. Mithcell Marsh, Kane Williamson, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, and Vijay Shankar were injured during the 2020 edition of the league. Hyderabad lost the elimination game, and the journey of the team ended without a trophy again that year.

Hyderabad has managed to win Indian T20 League in the year 2016 under the leadership of David Warner. It has qualified for the playoffs every year since that win but could not get its hands on the gold. Warner will look to start this year’s campaign in the Hyderabad vs Kolkata battle with a win to have a good start to the league.

Hyderabad had a purse value of just 10.75 crores before the auction this year. It could buy only the following three players with that sum of money:

  • Mujeeb ur Rahman (Bowler) – 1.5 crores
  • Kedar Jadhav (All-rounder) – 2 crores
  • Jagadeesha Suchith (Bowler) – 20 lakh

Mujeeb Ur Rahman is another mystery spinner from the lands of Afghanistan. With Rashid Khan and Mohammed Nabi already there, the chances of Mujeeb making it to the playing 11 today match is very slim. Kedar Jadhav had a role of a finisher in the Indian team. He would again be playing the same job for the men in orange.

Jagadeesha Suchith is a slow left-arm orthodox bowler. Hyderabad would be Suchith's fourth team in the Indian T20 League. Mumbai first bought him during the 2015 edition.

He made a debut for Mumbai, even before making his first-class debut, and took ten wickets in that season. Mumbai released him after Indian T20 League 2016. No team bid for him during the next three years. His Indian T20 League stint resumed after he was drafted in the Delhi team to replace the injured Harshal Patel in 2019. In 2020 Delhi transferred him to Punjab. Punjab released him before the auction and has found a new home this year.

Suchith’s inclusion in the team is an answer to the lack of Indian spinners in the squad. Hyderabad only had Shahbaz Nadeem before the auction. Now, Suchith will be the ideal partner to him.

Hyderabad also signed Jason Roy to replace Mitchell Marsh. Marsh opted out of the league due to personal reasons.

Hyderabad vs Kolkata Head to Head

Hyderabad became a part of the Indian T20 League in 2012. Since then, both teams have played a total of nineteen matches. Out of these, Kolkata has won twelve times, and Hyderabad has won seven games. Kolkata vs Hyderabad head to head contests suggests that Kolkata has dominated Hyderabad throughout these years.

Last year Kolkata won both the Hyderabad vs Kolkata matches. In the past five years, Kolkata has won nine out of the thirteen Hyderabad vs Kolkata games played between the two teams.

David Warner has scored the most runs in the Hyderabad vs Kolkata matches between both teams. He has made 616 runs in 14 games and also holds the record of the highest individual score. He made 126 runs off 59 balls in 2017.

Among the bowlers, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has taken the highest amount of wickets. He has picked up 19 wickets in 16 matches with an average of 24.32.

Hyderabad vs Kolkata: Playing 11 Today Indian T20 League Match

Jason Holder arrived in India on 5th April. His mandatory quarantine period will get over tomorrow, and hence he is not available for selection. All the other players of Hyderabad apart from Holder will be available for selection in today’s game.

Kolkata has the complete squad at its disposal, and it would be interesting to see who all might make it to the final 11.

Hyderabad Playing 11 Today

The number of overseas players available with Hyderabad is both its weakness and strengths. Two key overseas players were injured last year, but they managed to qualify for the playoffs.

The problem with Hyderabad is that to pick a perfect 11 they have to ignore a few of the match winners present in the team.

Mohammad Nabi is one such player with whom Hyderabad has not justice. In the last four seasons, he has played just 14 matches for Hyderabad. In 2019, he played eight games – the most number of games for him in a season. He bowled 29 overs that year and picked eight wickets with an impressive economy of 6.65. Despite that, he managed to play just a single game last season.

With Warner, Bairstow, and Williamson at the top again, Nabi might not get a single chance this year as well. With Warner, Bairstow, and Williamson at the top again, Nabi might not get a single chance this year as well.

The playing 11 today Indian T20 League match for Hyderabad in today’s Indian T20 League game might look like this:

Openers: David Warner (captain), Jonny Bairstow (wicket-keeper)

Middle-Order: Manish Pandey, Kane Williamson, Kedar Jadhav, Abhishek Sharma/Shahbaz Nadeem, Vijay Shankar

Bowlers: Rashid Khan, Sandeep Sharma/Khaleel Ahmed/, Jagadeesha Suchith, T Natarajan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Last year, Abdul Samad, Abhishek Sharma, and Priyam Garg got a few chances to feature on the team. It happened because Vijay Shankar was injured. With Vijay Shankar back in the side this year, the chances of the three youngsters making it to the probable playing 11 today might be less.

With Kedar Jadhav in today match playing 11, Vijay Shankar’s role would be to finish the games for Hyderabad. Also, the pitch condition will be a crucial factor in deciding the inclusion of Jagadeesha Suchith and Shahbaz Nadeem.

Kolkata Playing 11 Today

Kolkata almost made it to the playoffs last year, but a series of inconsistent performances was their biggest enemy.

Kolkata also struggled to find the right combination at the top. The combination of Nitish Rana and Shubman Gill yielded better results in the end, and Kolkata should stick with this combination this year.

Andre Rusell was injured in the latter part of the tournament last year. His absence did cost Kolkata a few matches. This year the franchise would be keen to see the fearless brand of cricket from the all-rounder once again.

The probable playing 11 in today’s match for Kolkata might look like this:

Openers: Shubman Gill, Nitish Rana

Middle Order: Rahul Tripathi/Karun Nair, Dinesh Karthik (wicket-keeper), Eoin Morgan (captain), Andre Rusell, Shakib Al Hasan/Sunil Narine

Bowlers: Harbhajan Singh/ Varun Chakravarthy, Pat Cummins/Lockie Ferguson, Prasidh Krishna/Shivam Mavi, Kuldeep Yadav/Kamlesh Nagarkoti

Rahul Tripathi played a few vital innings for Kolkata last year, and he should be given a permanent position in today Indian T20 League match playing 11. But Kolkata might also look at Karun Nair at number three. Tripathi or Nair, whoever gets selected in the team should be allowed to play in the top order, unlike last year. Rahul Tripathi batted at the sixth position in a few matches.

Both Shakib and Narine bring the same amount of skills to the table. It will be hard for Kolkata’s team management to pick one of them. But Narine’s performance last year might pave a way for Shakib to today playing 11.

Varun Chakravarthy was phenomenal with the ball last year. His performance helped him get a national call twice in a row. His chances of selection in the team are perfectly well. But Kolkata might also look at the experience of Harbhajan Singh. He might wear purple and gold tonight after wearing the yellow jersey for three years.

Lockie Ferguson had a decent outing last year for the franchise, and either he or Pat Cummins will be there to lead the pace attack.

Prasidh Krishna had a dream debut for India in the recently concluded ODI series against England, and that would be enough for his selection in the final XI. Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi might also be there on the side. The inclusion of Kuldeep Yadav will depend on the condition of the pitch.

Hyderabad vs Kolkata: Key Players in Today’s Match

Both Kolkata and Hyderabad will be looking to get a good start and build momentum for the rest of the tournament. The first match is always crucial and becomes the stepping stone to the later part of the series.

There will be a few players who will be playing a vital role in today’s match.

1. Jonny Bairstow

Jonny Bairstow looked in great shape in the ODI series against India. He piled up 219 runs in three matches of the series and was the highest run-getter. In the second ODI, he made 124 runs off 112 balls and helped England chased 337 runs in 43.3 overs.

Bairstow gets on a different level after wearing the orange jersey. In his last two stints with the Hyderabad franchise, he has made 790 runs with a strike rate of 142.34.

Bairstow and David Warner can easily take the game away from the opposition on any given day.

2. Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Bhuvneshwar is the highest wicket-taker for the Hyderabad franchise. He has taken 112 wickets in 90 matches.

Due to a hip injury, he had not played last year's Indian T20 League. It was the reason he was not there in the series against Australia just after the Indian T20 League. Bhuvi made his return to India’s limited over team in the series against England.

His economical bowling at the start and his bowling during the death overs helped India first clinch the T20 series by a 3-2 margin and then the ODI series by 2-1. In the T20s, his economy was 6.39, while in the ODIs it was 4.66.

His economical bowling alongside Rashid Khan will be a thing to watch this year.

3. Varun Chakravarthy

Varun Chakravarthy picked up 17 wickets in his debut season for Kolkata. He was the highest wicket-taker for his team.

He was picked up for the series against Australia right after the Indian T20 League. But he missed the bus due to an injury.

Later, he was selected for the T20 series against England in India. But after failing fitness tests, he missed that series as well. Rahul Chahar was selected in place of him, and he made a debut as well.

Varun would be hoping to perform well to earn a call again. The first few matches will be crucial because the team has few other quality spinners as well.

4. Eoin Morgan

It would be Eoin Morgan’s first series as a full-time captain. He would be hoping to leave a mark both with his captaincy and his batting skills. With the T20 World Cup around the corner, he would also want to get enough batting practice on Indian pitches.

Also, his role this year will be a lot different than last year. Kolkata has a solid top-order, and Morgan will need to strike hard right from the word go in almost every match this year.

The Best Fantasy Team Suggestion for Today’s Match

The pitch at the Chepauk remains slow throughout the match and hence is heaven for spinners. The fantasy cricket team should include spinners from both the side. The today match fantasy team suggestion from our end is:

  • Batsmen: Kane Williamson, Nitish Rana, Manish Pandey, Eoin Morgan
  • Wicket-Keeper: Jonny Bairstow
  • All-rounders: Vijay Shankar, Shakib Al Hasan, Rashid Khan, Andre Rusell
  • Bowlers: Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Prasidh Krishna, T Natarajan, Varun Chakravarthy

The captain of your fantasy team should be a player batting in the middle order. You can go for Nitish Rana, Manish Pandey, or Eoin Morgan.

A spinner should be the vice-captain simply because of today pitch report. The perfect pick for vice-captain would be Varun Chakravarthy or Rashid Khan.

Best Toss Prediction for Today’s Match

In the battle of Hyderabad vs Kolkata, the toss will be the real winner. The team winning the toss would love to bat first and use the pitch to its fullest.

In the second innings, spinners will play a huge role. Both the teams have some quality spinners who can utilize the condition pretty well.

Both the teams look somewhat similar on paper. Players who have shaped their games according to T20s are present in both teams. Some of the best economical bowlers are also present on each side. Hence, the toss will decide who will draw the first blood in the Indian T20 League match today.

Who Will Win Today Match Prediction?

On paper, both Kolkata and Hyderabad look identical. Their approach towards the match is also the same. These are the only teams that have an overseas captain.

Hyderabad has two of the cleanest hitters of the cricket ball present at the top in the form of Bairstow and Warner. But the middle-order still looks weak. It has bowlers who can restrict the opposition and defend any total. The absence of a proper finisher can be another issue that Hyderabad will need to look at and will affect the match prediction today.

The batting unit of Kolkata is pretty solid. But the selection and playing order will be something that Kolkata will again look after this year. The spin department is filled with players who bring a range of skills to the table. But the lack of an experienced Indian fast bowler will again be a problem for Kolkata this year and will be a factor in todays match prediction.

Today’s match prediction mentions that Kolkata has fewer issues when compared to Hyderabad and hence the battle of Hyderabad vs Kolkata might go in Kolkata’s hand.
